The arrival of spring brings with it some great events that we know you and the family will enjoy!  First, we are proud to be hosting the Southside Vintage Marketplace again!  The open air market will be every second Saturday April-October. This event is a collaboration between the Southside Vintage Marketplace and The Southport Antique Mall striving to bring unique shopping options and the ability to shop local to the Southside of Indianapolis!

April also means another chance for the ladies of our community to enjoy A Women's Night of Whimsy, a benefit for the Julian Center on the 19th of April. It is ticketed after hours shopping event featuring pop-up vendors, food trucks, wine and good times for a great cause with your best gal pals. Half of ticket sales go directly to the Julian Center as well as 100% of the silent auction proceeds. We hope to see everyone there!

We were so very proud to nominate Geri Bell this year for a Rose Award for her lifelong dedication to superior customer service.  Geri finds joy in working with the public daily and finds meaning in brightening someone’s day with a friendly smile. She has worked at Southport Antique Mall as a floorwalker for over 15 years. In this position Geri works to help customers find that special something they are looking for and has customers who are so passionate about her service that they schedule their visits to the antique mall around her hours. No matter what is happening in her personal life, Geri is always perfectly put together and wearing a smile.  To us, Geri is the embodiment of elegance and grace and now all of Indianapolis will know just what a gem she is!

Our very own Geri Bell has won a ROSE Award for her embodiment of Hoosier hospitality.  Every year Visit Indy receives nominations from people all around Indianapolis who want to recognize those in their lives that excel at customer service.  This year there was a record breaking number of nominees totaling 102 with only 11 winners, making it an even greater honor to be recognized.  We are so very proud of you, Geri!

kovels: making antique research easy for over 50 years

PictureRetrieved from startribune.com
Ralph and Terry Kovel have been known as experts in antiques and collectibles since their first book was published in 1953.  While decorating their first apartment, the pair began their affair with collectibles and antiques by trying to decipher marks on their beloved vintage porcelain pieces purchased from house sales for their new home.  And now with over 100 books, special reports, and the country’s longest running syndicated newspaper column discussing topics ranging from identification and care to trends and pricing, the couple is revered as one of the nation’s leading experts in antiques and collectibles (About the Kovels, 2015).  Following Ralph’s passing in 2008, Terry, her children, and her staff continued building the legacy her and Ralph grew together (About Kovels Antiques, Inc, 2015).

And this legacy even extends beyond their impressive library of print publications.  People can have access to their expertise and knowledge without even purchasing a book or newspaper.  They can learn about antiques and collectibles by visiting their website at Kovels.com.  It is a leading resource for antique collectors and dealers alike.  It provides news, resources, tips and tricks, a price guide, forums to talk with others interested in collectibles, and more.  They even publish their top 20 searches every month, allowing visitors to see what is trending in antiques and collectibles to help you stay current on what’s new with everything old.

In November, we talked about staying ahead of color trends in furniture and decor by looking at what is happening with color in fashion.  Soon after color trends in fashion, it tends to gain popularity in home decor as well.  Pantone announced their fashion color trends for this spring, so we suggest taking inspiration from this fashion season if you are running out of colors ideas!  For more information on this spring's colors visit Pantone's website!

Make your own chalk paint

Chalk paint is all the rage these days!  It is fun, covers well, and helps everyone make those adorable homemade chalkboards.  And now you can make this awesome paint from home with paints you already have and it is super easy.  There are different recipes all over the web, but we tested this one out and we loved it!  All you need is 1 tablespoon of unsanded grout, 1/2 cup acrylic or latex paint, a mixing cup, and spoon.  We recommend using a mason jar because the measurement for the paint is on the jar and it seals it nicely!   Adjust grout as needed for thickness and don't be afraid to mix your own colors!  Just measure, mix, and paint!

And remember chalk paint is great for covering furniture as well!  It's not just for chalkboards!

We are happy to have participated again this year in the Greater Indianapolis Garage Sale.  Volunteer dealers shared their expansive knowledge on antique and vintage jewelry, art, and more with the people of Indianapolis.  We had a great time offering free item evaluations to those who stopped by with their treasured heirlooms.  It's always a great time had by all and a big thanks  to those who made it possible, our dealers especially!

Click here if you are interested in learning more about the Greater Indianapolis Garage Sale.
